Will the Moon have time zones?

Time zones are the first thing people picture when they hear that the Moon needs its own time. It is a reasonable guess, and it is not what anybody has proposed.

Every document on the table treats the Moon as one place with one scale.

The short answer: probably not zones

No published proposal defines lunar time zones. The United States policy memorandum asks for a single standard for the Moon, traceable to UTC [1]Official. The IAU resolution of 2024 defines one coordinate time for the lunar reference system [3]Official.

That is not a decision yet, because none of these texts has been turned into a running time scale. It is, however, the direction every proposal points in.

Why Earth has zones and the Moon may not

Earth’s zones exist because Earth’s solar day is short. Local noon travels right around the planet within a single day, so a clock tied to the Sun stays useful for everyday life.

The Moon does not offer that. Sunrise to sunrise at a fixed point on the lunar surface takes about 29.5 Earth days [2]Official. A zone that followed local lunar noon would run more than two weeks of daylight and more than two weeks of darkness, which is useless for scheduling a crew or a data downlink [5].

Missions therefore keep working in units of Earth hours, whatever the Sun is doing outside [1]Official. The length of the lunar day is explained in how long a day on the Moon lasts.

What each body proposes

Four organizations have said something concrete. None of them proposes zones.

What “one time zone for the Moon” actually means

Headlines often say the Moon will get its own time zone. In everyday English a time zone is an offset from a global scale, like UTC+2. That is not what is being proposed.

A single lunar scale is a different object: its own definition, its own rate, its own realization. It is not UTC shifted by a whole number of hours, because a lunar clock does not tick at the rate of an Earth clock. What Coordinated Lunar Time would be sets out the definitions in full.

Agreement is not universal either. Reporting in 2026 described the United States and China as working towards different lunar time arrangements [8]. What has actually been published on the Chinese side is listed in China and lunar time.

What is not decided

  • The tie to UTC. IAU Resolution III asks international organizations to agree how a lunar reference time scale, a lunar coordinate time and UTC relate [9]Official. Until that is settled, no offset can be written down.
  • Site offsets. Whether individual landing sites would carry any local offset at all has not been addressed in any published text.
  • Local solar time for crews. Nothing prevents a mission from keeping a local sunrise schedule internally, the way Mars rovers keep local solar time. No document decides that question either.
  • Realizations. The CIPM wording allows several realizations of one scale [4]Official. How many, and run by whom, is open.
